Bill Hayden - Early Life

Early Life

Bill Hayden was born in Brisbane, the son of George Hayden, an Irish American sailor born in Oakland, California, in 1881. Hayden's paternal grandparents were from Cork in Ireland and significant parts of his approach to social issues and politics throughout his public life reflected the Irish side of his family background. He was educated at Brisbane State High School and served in the Queensland Police Force from 1953 to 1961. He continued his education through private study, completing an economics degree at the University of Queensland. Prior to the 1970s he was a self-described democratic socialist.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

Progress would not have been the rarity it is if the early food had not been the late poison.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

Most vices ... demand considerable self-sacrifices. There is no greater mistake than to suppose that a vicious life is a life of uninterrupted pleasure. It is a life almost as wearisome and painful—if strenuously led—as Christian’s in The Pilgrim’s Progress.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
