Early Life
Annan was born Beulah May Sheriff in Owensboro, Kentucky, to John Sheriff and Mary Neel. Whilst living in Kentucky, she married her first husband; newspaper linotype operator Perry Stephens. They were divorced and she re-married in Louisville, Kentucky to Albert (Al) Annan, a car mechanic. Shortly afterwards the couple moved to Chicago. There Albert found work as a mechanic at a garage and Beulah decided she wanted to work as well, eventually becoming a bookkeeper at Tennant's Model laundry. At the laundry she met Harry Kalstedt and began an affair.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“I taught school in the early days of my manhood and I think I know something about mothers. There is a thread of aspiration that runs strong in them. It is the fiber that has formed the most unselfish creatures who inhabit this earth. They want three things only; for their children to be fed, to be healthy, and to make the most of themselves.”
—Lyndon Baines Johnson (19081973)
“The secret of the truly successful, I believe, is that they learned very early in life how not to be busy. They saw through that adage, repeated to me so often in childhood, that anything worth doing is worth doing well. The truth is, many things are worth doing only in the most slovenly, halfhearted fashion possible, and many other things are not worth doing at all.”
—Barbara Ehrenreich (b. 1941)
