In the novelisations of the series, it is stated that Bernard eventually rose to the post of Head of the Home Civil Service and was appointed a Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Bath (GCB). The novels takes the form of diaries written by Hacker and the so-called Appleby Papers. Bernard himself contributes in interviews with the authors.
