Axis (anatomy) - The Body

The Body

The body is deeper in front than behind, and prolonged downward anteriorly so as to overlap the upper and front part of the third vertebra.

It presents in front a median longitudinal ridge, separating two lateral depressions for the attachment of the Longus colli muscles.

Its under surface is concave from before backward and convex from side to side.

Famous quotes containing the word body:

We are such docile creatures, normally, that it takes a virus to jolt us out of life’s routine. A couple of days in a fever bed are, in a sense, health-giving; the change in body temperature, the change in pulse rate, and the change of scene have a restorative effect on the system equal to the hell they raise.
    —E.B. (Elwyn Brooks)

I shook off the sweat and the sun. I understood that I had destroyed the balance of the day, the exceptional silence of a beach where I had been happy. Then I shot four more times at an inert body which the bullets penetrated without appearing so. And it was like four brief knocks that I struck on the door of misfortune.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)
