The Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) is a college athletic conference which operates mostly on the United States' eastern seaboard. It also has several members in the Midwest, including two member schools in Ohio, Dayton and Xavier (located in Dayton and Cincinnati, respectively); Saint Louis (in St. Louis, Missouri); and Butler (located in Indianapolis). Virginia Commonwealth and Butler joined the A-10 on July 1, 2012. Although some of its members are state-funded, more than half of its membership is made up of private, Catholic institutions. Despite the name, there are 17 partial or full-time members: 16 basketball and other sports, and one affiliate member that participate in women's field hockey only.

Famous quotes containing the words atlantic and/or conference:
“We recognize caste in dogs because we rank ourselves by the familiar dog system, a ladderlike social arrangement wherein one individual outranks all others, the next outranks all but the first, and so on down the hierarchy. But the cat system is more like a wheel, with a high-ranking cat at the hub and the others arranged around the rim, all reluctantly acknowledging the superiority of the despot but not necessarily measuring themselves against one another.”
—Elizabeth Marshall Thomas. Strong and Sensitive Cats, Atlantic Monthly (July 1994)
“The peace conference must not adjourn without the establishment of some ordered system of international government, backed by power enough to give authority to its decrees. ... Unless a league something like this results at our peace conference, we shall merely drop back into armed hostility and international anarchy. The war will have been fought in vain ...”
—Virginia Crocheron Gildersleeve (18771965)
