The "third Law"
Kepler discovered his "third law" a decade after the publication of the Astronomia nova as a result of his investigations in the 1619 Harmonices Mundi (Harmonies of the world). He found that the ratio of the length of the semi-major axis of each planet's orbit (cubed), to the time of its orbital period (squared), is the same for all planets.

Famous quotes containing the word law:
“I was not born to be forced. I will breathe after my own fashion. Let us see who is the strongest. What force has a multitude? They can only force me who obey a higher law than I.... I do not hear of men being forced to live this way or that by masses of men. What sort of life were that to live?”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
