Lucassen has a brother, Gjalt, who speaks through a megaphone on the song "I'm The Slime" from his solo album Lost in the New Real.
In 2007, Lucassen suffered anosmia and sank into a depression.
On September 3, 2012, Lucassen revealed on his Facebook page that he has been suffering from tinnitus for the past 2 months. He stated "I have a horrible beep that will never go away... And the test today also showed pretty bad hearing damage (4k range) from all the years of noise"
