Arizona League

The Arizona League is a minor league baseball league that operates in and around Phoenix, Arizona. It is a rookie-level professional baseball league run by Major League Baseball since 1989. Games are played at the spring training complexes of the team's parent organizations from mid-June until the end of August. Night games are commonly played in the spring training stadium, but this is not always the case. The regular season is 56 games.

No official attendance records are kept as there is no paid admittance fee, but few spectators show up for games. The league is designed to be played in front of small crowds, often in temperatures above 100°F, but this does not affect either quality or competition. Teams primarily consist of players from the Dominican Republic and drafted high school and college players. The league is also where major league players often go for their first rehab assignments.

The three division winners will be joined by a Wild Card team in the playoffs. The team with the best record will meet the Wild Card team and the other two division winners will meet in one-game playoffs. The two winners will meet in a championship game.

Bob Richmond is the league president. The league offices are in Boise, Idaho.

Famous quotes containing the words arizona and/or league:

Desert rains are usually so definitely demarked that the story of the man who washed his hands in the edge of an Arizona thunder shower without wetting his cuffs seems almost credible.
—Administration in the State of Ariz, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

He will deliver you from six troubles; in seven no harm shall touch you. In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword. You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and shall not fear destruction when it comes. At destruction and famine you shall laugh, and shall not fear the wild animals of the earth. For you shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the wild animals shall be at peace with you.
    Bible: Hebrew, Job 5:19-23.
