– Not completely understood – May inhibit iodination of tyrosyl residues in thyroglobulin. – It is thought that they inhibit the thyroperoxidase- catalysed oxidation reactions by acting as substrates for the postulated peroxidase-iodinium complex, thus competitively inhibiting the interaction with tyrosine. • Propylthiouracil additionally may reduce the deiodination of T4 in to T3 in peripheral tissues.

—Clara Barton (18211912)
