Andrew Strauss - Life and Career

Life and Career

During his early career, Strauss spent several years in the cities of Sydney and Adelaide in Australia, and briefly played first-grade cricket alongside Australian bowler Brett Lee. While in Australia he met his future wife, actress Ruth McDonald, whom he married in October 2003 and they now live in Marlow, with their sons, Sam (born 4 December 2005) and Luca (14 July 2008).

Strauss is a supporter of the Conservative Party, raising £25,000 for the party in 2011 when he offered a round of golf in his company as a prize at a fundraising auction. He is also President of the Primary Club Juniors, a charity which helps fund blind cricket. In aid of the cause he took part in a blind game, wearing a blindfold and being dismissed on his second ball.

Strauss has a variety of nicknames ranging from Straussy, Levi and Johann, to the more obscure Lord Brocket, Mareman, The General, Jazzer and Muppet.

Already Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), Strauss was promoted to Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2011 Birthday Honours. His alma mater, Durham University, conferred an Honorary Doctorate of DCL upon him in 2011.

Famous quotes containing the words life and/or career:

    Holinesse on the head,
Light and perfections on the breast,
Harmonious bells below, raising the dead
To leade them unto life and rest.
    Thus are true Aarons drest.
    George Herbert (1593–1633)

Whether lawyer, politician or executive, the American who knows what’s good for his career seeks an institutional rather than an individual identity. He becomes the man from NBC or IBM. The institutional imprint furnishes him with pension, meaning, proofs of existence. A man without a company name is a man without a country.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
