Andrew Hore - Conviction For Shooting Fur Seals

Conviction For Shooting Fur Seals

In 2005, Hore was one of three men convicted and fined for shooting and killing a protected fur seal in New Zealand. Judge Rollo described the offending as a "grossly irresponsible, spontaneous act of hooliganism". Judge Rollo said he believed the aggravating features of the offending were the number of shots fired, the close proximity to the public and the fact that the area in which they were shooting was world-renowned for its wildlife.

Despite this conviction, Andrew Hore was named New Zealand rugby player of the year in 2008.

Famous quotes containing the words conviction, shooting, fur and/or seals:

And in cases where profound conviction has been wrought, the eloquent man is he who is no beautiful speaker, but who is inwardly drunk with a certain belief. It agitates and tears him, and perhaps almost bereaves him of the power of articulation.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

One ... aspect of the case for World War II is that while it was still a shooting affair it taught us survivors a great deal about daily living which is valuable to us now that it is, ethically at least, a question of cold weapons and hot words.
    M.F.K. Fisher (1908–1992)

    Your coat in my closet,
your bright stones on my hand,
    the gaudy fur animals
I do not know how to use,
settle on me like a debt.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

Social and scientific progress are assured, sir, once our great system of postpossession payments is in operation, not the installment plan, no sir, but a system of small postpossession payments that clinch the investment. No possible rational human wish unfulfilled. A man with a salary of fifty dollars a week can start payments on a Rolls-Royce, the Waldorf-Astoria, or a troupe of trained seals if he so desires.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)
