Singing Style
Compared to Helloween's previous vocalist Michael Kiske, Deris has a more restrained style of singing, with less of a focus on power and hitting high notes. His replacement of Kiske has attracted some criticism, but generally fans have had a positive reception to Deris' differing style. Numerous metal fans have noticed the uncanny similarity of Deris' vocal sound and style to that of hard rock vocalist John Schlitt of Head East and Petra. In some areas his vocal sound recalls that of Kai Hansen and Biff Byford as well.

“To translate, one must have a style of his own, for otherwise the translation will have no rhythm or nuance, which come from the process of artistically thinking through and molding the sentences; they cannot be reconstituted by piecemeal imitation. The problem of translation is to retreat to a simpler tenor of ones own style and creatively adjust this to ones author.”
