Other Approaches To Dating
Glottochronology has been used by some linguists to attempt to date languages by the changes in their lexicon over time. The method has been much criticized because of the assumption of a constant change rate. A revision of glottochronology by Sergei Starostin allows rate variation with time and dates the earliest PIE to 4670 BC, prior to the breakaway of Hittite, and the later PIE (origin of all other IE languages) to 3810 BC.

Famous quotes containing the words approaches and/or dating:
“If I commit suicide, it will not be to destroy myself but to put myself back together again. Suicide will be for me only one means of violently reconquering myself, of brutally invading my being, of anticipating the unpredictable approaches of God. By suicide, I reintroduce my design in nature, I shall for the first time give things the shape of my will.”
—Antonin Artaud (1896–1948)
“We go on dating from Cold Fridays and Great Snows; but a little colder Friday, or greater snow would put a period to man’s existence on the globe.”
—Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
