Search For Medal of Honor Action Site

In October 2006, US Army Colonel Douglas Mastriano, head of the Sergeant York Discovery Expedition (SYDE), found slugs from a .45 caliber weapon which he concluded was proof of the location of York's exploits. Dr. Tom Nolan, head of the Sergeant York Project and a geographer at the R.O. Fullerton Laboratory for Spatial Technology at Middle Tennessee State University, places the site 500 meters south of the location identified by Mastriano. The actual location of York's Medal of Honor action is still under dispute, and a memorial has been built on the site where Mastriano found the slugs. Battlefield guides are available at the Sergeant York Historic Trail.

Famous quotes containing the words search for, search, honor, action and/or site:

When you start with a portrait and search for a pure form, a clear volume, through successive eliminations, you arrive inevitably at the egg. Likewise, starting with the egg and following the same process in reverse, one finishes with the portrait.
    Pablo Picasso (1881–1973)

Adolescents are travelers, far from home with no native land, neither children nor adults. They are jet-setters who fly from one country to another with amazing speed. Sometimes they are four years old, an hour later they are twenty-five. They don’t really fit anywhere. There’s a yearning for place, a search for solid ground.
    Mary Pipher (20th century)

One should still honor the enemy in his friend. Can you go up close to your friend without going over to him?
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

This nation asks for action, and action now.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

I am not aware that any man has ever built on the spot which I occupy. Deliver me from a city built on the site of a more ancient city, whose materials are ruins, whose gardens cemeteries. The soil is blanched and accursed there, and before that becomes necessary the earth itself will be destroyed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
