Role
While designated an aircraft carrier by the West, the design of the Kuznetsov class implies a mission different from that of western carriers. The term used by her builders to describe the Russian ships is tyazholiy avianesushchiy kreyser (TAKR or TAVKR) - “heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser” - intended to support and defend strategic missile-carrying submarines, surface ships, and maritime missile-carrying aircraft of the Russian fleet.
In its fleet defense role the Kuznetsov's P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 NATO reporting name: Shipwreck) anti-ship cruise missiles, 3K95 Kinzhal (Gauntlet) Surface-to-Air missiles, and Su-33 (Flanker-D) aircraft are its main weapons. The fixed-wing aircraft on Admiral Kuznetsov are intended for air superiority operations to protect a deployed task force. The carrier also carries numerous helicopters for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and search and rescue (SAR) operations.

Famous quotes containing the word role:
“Whatever were doing, whoever we are, it isnt enough. . . . Little wonder we have trouble finding role models to guide us through these shoals. No one less than God Herself could be all the things wed like to be to all the people wed like to feel approval from.”
—Melinda M. Marshall (20th century)
“All of the assumptions once made about a parents role have been undercut by the specialists. The psychiatric specialists, the psychological specialists, the educational specialists, all have mystified child development. They have fostered the idea that understanding children and promoting their intellectual well-being is too complex for mothers and requires the intervention of experts.”
—Elaine Heffner (20th century)
“When things turn out pretty much as expected, parents give little thought to how much they have influenced the outcome. When things dont turn out as expected, parents give a great deal of thought to the role they play.”
—Arlene Harder (20th century)
