Standards
The European Union has defined a Common External Power Supply for smartphones intended to replace the many incompatible proprietary power supplies and eliminate waste by reducing the total number of supplies manufactured.
Larry Page, a founder of Google, has proposed a 12 V 15 A standard for almost all equipment requiring an external converter. New buildings would also have 12V DC wiring, so that in effect the AC to DC adapter circuitry would be built into the wall.

Famous quotes containing the word standards:
“To arrive at a just estimate of a renowned mans character one must judge it by the standards of his time, not ours.”
—Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (18351910)
“Measured by any standard known to scienceby horse-power, calories, volts, mass in any shape, the tension and vibration and volume and so-called progression of society were full a thousand times greater in 1900 than in 1800;Mthe force had doubled ten times over, and the speed, when measured by electrical standards as in telegraphy, approached infinity, and had annihilated both space and time. No law of material movement applied to it.”
—Henry Brooks Adams (18381918)
“The home is a womans natural background.... From the beginning I tried to have the policy of the store reflect as nearly as it was possible in the commercial world, those standards of comfort and grace which are apparent in a lovely home.”
—Hortense Odlum (1892?)
