A Portuguesa - The Song's Title

The Song's Title

The title A Portuguesa means "the Portuguese" while the word "song" is merely implied. In a very similar way, La Marseillaise, the national anthem of France, has a substantive referring to Marseille, the Belgian anthem, the Brabançonne, to Brabant, and the Socialist anthem, the Internationale, literally means "the International".

Famous quotes containing the words song and/or title:

you see, we live in a cold climate
and are not permitted to kiss on the street
so I made up a song that wasn’t true.
I made up a song called Marriage.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

Bolkenstein, a Minister, was speaking on the Dutch programme from London, and he said that they ought to make a collection of diaries and letters after the war. Of course, they all made a rush at my diary immediately. Just imagine how interesting it would be if I were to publish a romance of the “Secret Annexe.” The title alone would be enough to make people think it was a detective story.
    Anne Frank (1929–1945)
