Famous quotes containing the words elected, state and/or leaders:
“Whether elected or appointed
He considers himself the Lords annointed,
And indeed the ointment lingers on him
So thick you cant get your fingers on him.”
—Ogden Nash (19021971)
“I also believe that few people remain completely untouched by the thought that instead of the life they lead there might also be another, where all actions proceed from a very personal state of excitement. Where actions have meanings, not just causes. And where a person, to use a trivial word, is happy, and not just nervously tormenting himself.”
—Robert Musil (18801942)
“For aesthetics is the mother of ethics.... Were we to choose our leaders on the basis of their reading experience and not their political programs, there would be much less grief on earth. I believenot empirically, alas, but only theoreticallythat for someone who has read a lot of Dickens to shoot his like in the name of an idea is harder than for someone who has read no Dickens.”
—Joseph Brodsky (b. 1940)
