Differences From Reality
One of the film's major differences is Frost's relationship with his father, Clyde. The film portrays Lane as wanting to prove himself to Clyde to earn his respect. In reality, both Lane and Clyde had a great relationship in which Clyde never pushed Lane to pursue bull riding and always supported his career.
Lane and Kellie were married in Quanah, Texas on January 5, 1985. In the film, they are married at her parents' ranch in 1984. They also did not live in a trailer. Lane also rode Red Rock and won the championship in 1986, not 1987. He also rode Red Rock four out of seven times and not three.
None of Lane's family members, including Kellie, were present at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo on July 30, 1989. It was also a very rainy and muddy day, and not sunny and dusty as seen in the film.

Famous quotes containing the words differences and/or reality:
“I may be able to spot arrowheads on the desert but a refrigerator is a jungle in which I am easily lost. My wife, however, will unerringly point out that the cheese or the leftover roast is hiding right in front of my eyes. Hundreds of such experiences convince me that men and women often inhabit quite different visual worlds. These are differences which cannot be attributed to variations in visual acuity. Man and women simply have learned to use their eyes in very different ways.”
—Edward T. Hall (b. 1914)
“I knew very well that this hope was chimerical. I was like a pauper who mingles fewer tears with his dry bread if he tells himself that at any moment a stranger will bequeath to him his fortune. We must all, in order to make reality more tolerable, keep alive in us a few little follies.”
—Marcel Proust (18711922)
