Southern FM, like many other community radio stations in Melbourne, has incorporated many non-English speaking groups into the program schedule.
Southern FM is licensed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority as a "C" class community radio station, operating on a power output of 200 watts ERP from Moorabbin.
The longest serving on air presenters at Southern FM include Reg Pitt (Southern Country), Terri Adams (Kaleidoscope), Barry Ikin (Let's Dance), David Frost (Breakfast/Tunes I Can't Forget), Greg Neighbour (Choicecuts), Andrew Rennie (The Space Show).
Presenters who moved on include a small group who participated in the first broadcasts of a temporary youth broadcasting station Hitz FM, following the success in 1991 of a Saturday Night radio program NightBeat. In later years another radio broadcast group Golden Days Radio (at time of formation known as Spirit Of Australia Broadcasters) was founded by a number of people formerly associated with Southern FM

Famous quotes containing the word southern:
“I sometimes wonder that we can be so frivolous ... as to attend to the gross but somewhat foreign form of servitude called Negro Slavery, there are so many keen and subtle masters that enslave both north and south. It is hard to have a southern overseer; it is worse to have a northern one; but worst of all when you are the slave-driver of yourself.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
