5.5 Metre (keelboat) - The Formula

The Formula

The measurement formula is given in the 2006 International Five Point Five Metre Rating Rules:

5.500 \mbox{ metres} \ge 0.9 \cdot \left( \frac{L \cdot \sqrt{S}} {12 \cdot \sqrt{D}} + \frac{L + \sqrt{S}} {4} \right)

where

  • = length for rating
  • = measured sail area
  • = displacement in cubic metres

Famous quotes containing the word formula:

So, if we must give a general formula applicable to all kinds of soul, we must describe it as the first actuality [entelechy] of a natural organized body.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)

In the most desirable conditions, the child learns to manage anxiety by being exposed to just the right amounts of it, not much more and not much less. This optimal amount of anxiety varies with the child’s age and temperament. It may also vary with cultural values.... There is no mathematical formula for calculating exact amounts of optimal anxiety. This is why child rearing is an art and not a science.
    Alicia F. Lieberman (20th century)
