4th Mountain Division (Wehrmacht)

The German 4th Mountain Division Enzian ("Gentian" – a type of flower) was established in October 1940. It took part in the 1941 Balkans Campaign and then joined Army Group South in Operation Barbarossa after it was already underway. In 1942 it participated in the failed attempt to seize the Caucasus under Army Group A. As German fortunes in the east waned the division was pushed back into the Kuban bridgehead, the Crimea, the western Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia, finally surrendering to the Soviets near Czech Olomouc when the war ended in May 1945.

Famous quotes containing the words mountain and/or division:

I’ve been up the mountain and I had a choice. Should I come down? So I came down. God said, “Okay, you’ve been up on the mountain, now you go down. You’re on your own, free. Check in later, but now you’re on your own.”
Bob Dylan [Robert Allen Zimmerman] (b. 1941)

If the technology cannot shoulder the entire burden of strategic change, it nevertheless can set into motion a series of dynamics that present an important challenge to imperative control and the industrial division of labor. The more blurred the distinction between what workers know and what managers know, the more fragile and pointless any traditional relationships of domination and subordination between them will become.
    Shoshana Zuboff (b. 1951)
