4 (New York City Subway Service)
The 4 Lexington Avenue Express is a rapid transit service of the New York City Subway. It is colored apple green on station signs, route signs, and the official subway map, since it uses the IRT Lexington Avenue Line in Manhattan.
The 4 service operates at all times. The daytime service pattern is between Woodlawn in the Bronx and Utica Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn via Jerome Avenue Local in the Bronx, Lexington Avenue Express in Manhattan, and Eastern Parkway Express in Brooklyn.
During late nights, approximately 11:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. (Sundays to 8:30 a.m.) the 4 is extended to/from New Lots Avenue in New Lots, Brooklyn via Livonia Avenue to replace the 3. During this time, the 4 runs local east of Franklin Avenue. After midnight, the 4 serves all stops in Brooklyn (except Hoyt Street). In Manhattan, 4 trains run local between approximately 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Limited rush hour trains run to New Lots Avenue even when the 3 is running. During rush hours, the 4 skips 138th Street – Grand Concourse in the peak direction (to Manhattan during a.m. hours, from Manhattan during p.m. hours). Also during that period, some northbound trains run express north of 167th Street and terminate at Burnside Avenue.

“And New York is the most beautiful city in the world? It is not far from it. No urban night is like the night there.... Squares after squares of flame, set up and cut into the aether. Here is our poetry, for we have pulled down the stars to our will.”
—Ezra Pound (18851972)
“Man will return to his origins. Goethe has finally become as squiggly as the city of his fathers.”
—Franz Grillparzer (17911872)

when Im ripped from the doorstep
by commerce or fate. Then I submit
to the awful subway of the world....”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
