43rd Academy Awards

The 43rd Academy Awards were presented April 15, 1971 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. There was no host.

It was during this ceremony that George C. Scott became the first actor to reject an Oscar, claiming that the Academy Awards were "a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons." Marlon Brando would do the same thing two years later, claiming Hollywood's mistreatment towards Native American actors as his reason for rejecting the Best Actor Oscar for The Godfather.

Famous quotes containing the word academy:

...I have come to make distinctions between what I call the academy and literature, the moral equivalents of church and God. The academy may lie, but literature tries to tell the truth.
    Dorothy Allison (b. 1949)
