The 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot was a Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army. Originally the 43rd Highlanders they were renumbered to 42nd in 1749 on the disbanding of the existing 42nd Regiment, which was known as the "Highland Independent Regiment" and as "Oglethorpe's Regiment of Foot".

Till even I have ceased
To come as a foot printer,
And only some slight beast
So mousy or so foxy
Shall print there as my proxy.”
