23rd Street is a local station on the IND Eighth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue in Chelsea, Manhattan, it is served by the C and E trains, the former of which is replaced by the A train during late nights.
This underground station opened on September 10, 1932, as part of the initial segment of the Independent Subway System, at the time comprising what is now the IND Eighth Avenue Line from Chambers Street to 207th Street. There are four tracks and two side platforms. The two center tracks are used by the A express train during daytime hours. Just north of this station, a storage track begins between the two express tracks. This track runs north and stub-ends at the south end of the center platform at 34th Street – Penn Station.
Both platform walls have "23RD ST." name tablets in a yellow background and "23" in white numbering on a black border. There are also directional signs in the same format. The platform columns are yellow with every other one having the standard black and white station signs.
All fare controls are on platform level. The full-time ones are at the south end of the station. Each entrance/exit has a turnstile bank, token booth, and two staircases to the street. The northbound side leads to either eastern corners of 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue and the southbound side leads to either western corners. A crossunder within fare control here connects both platforms.
Both platforms have another fare control area at their north ends that require going up a short flight of stairs to reach. Though open at all times, they are unstaffed, containing no token booth and just HEET turnstiles. Each entrance here has two street stairs, the northbound side to either eastern corners of 25th Street and Eighth Avenue and the southbound side to either western corners. The crossunder here is closed.
Each platform also has an exit-only at the center. Two turnstiles lead to a small mezzanine, where a single staircase goes up to the streets. The northbound side leads to the southeast corner of 24th Street and 8th Avenue and the southbound side to the northwest corner.

“He seems like an average type of man. Hes not, like smart. Im not trying to rag on him or anything. But he has the same mentality I haveand Im in the eighth grade.”

“Only in America ... do these peasants, our mothers, get their hair dyed platinum at the age of sixty, and walk up and down Collins Avenue in Florida in pedalpushers and mink stolesand with opinions on every subject under the sun. It isnt their fault they were given a gift like speechlook, if cows could talk, they would say things just as idiotic.”
—Philip Roth (b. 1933)
