2006 African Women's Championship
The 2006 Women's African Football Championship was originally scheduled to be held in Gabon, but due to "organisational reasons" Gabon withdrew from hosting the competition. Nigeria took over hosting rights, hosted the final tournament between October 28 and November 11, and won the tournament after defeating Ghana 1–0 in the final. South Africa's Portia Modise was named Player of the Championship.

Famous quotes containing the words african and/or women:
“The fact that white people readily and proudly call themselves white, glorify all that is white, and whitewash all that is glorified, becomes unnatural and bigoted in its intent only when these same whites deny persons of African heritage who are Black the natural and inalienable right to readilyproudlycall themselves black, glorify all that is black, and blackwash all that is glorified.”
—Abbey Lincoln (b. 1930)
“You know, whenever women make imaginary female kingdoms in literature, they are always very permissive, to use the jargon word, and easy and generous and self-indulgent, like the relationships between women when there are no men around. They make each other presents, and they have little feasts, and nobody punishes anyone else. This is the female way of going along when there are no men about or when men are not in the ascendant.”
—Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
