Route and Stages
This edition of the Giro contained three individual time trial events that covered a total of 80.15 km (50 mi). The organizers divided the remaining eighteen stages into three categories: flat stages, medium mountain stages, and mountain stages. Ten of the stages were declared flat stages. Of the eight stages remaining, three stages were designated medium mountain stages and five were ranked as mountain stages.
The fifteenth was originally intended to be 205 km (127 mi) and to start in Livigno. However, due to very poor weather conditions the start was moved to Villa di Tirano, and the stage was shortened to 154 km (96 mi). The route originally had the riders crossing the Forcola di Livigno, a mountain located 10 km (6 mi) outside of the original start in Livigno, but due to the bad weather at the base and top of the climb the organizers were forced to exclude the pass.

Famous quotes containing the words route and/or stages:
“In the mountains the shortest route is from peak to peak, but for that you must have long legs. Aphorisms should be peaks: and those to whom they are spoken should be big and tall of stature.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
“Whoeer has travelled lifes dull round,
Whereer his stages may have been,
May sigh to think he still has found
The warmest welcome, at an inn.”
—William Shenstone (17141763)
