Trial
In his trial Gómez-García claimed that he only wanted to scare the officers, but the arresting officers and his ex-girlfriend testified that he was proud to have murdered Officer Young. He testified that he was humiliated by Young, but that it was the heckling of his friends that drove him to return to the dance hall to shoot the police officers.
On October 26, 2006 Gómez-García was convicted and sentenced to the maximum punishment of 80 years. He was wearing the number "13", a symbol associated with the street gang Sureños, shaved into his hair. The judge expressed the opinion the sentence was not severe enough.

Famous quotes containing the word trial:
“Looks like we got a trial ahead of us. But its not the first time. Weve had to go it alone before, and well have to go it alone again. Were tough. Weve had to be tough ever since Brother Brigham led our people across the plain. Well, they survived and I dang it, well, well, well survive too. Now put out your fires and get to your wagons.”
—Frank S. Nugent (19081965)
“You may talk about Free Love, if you please, but we are to have the right to vote. To-day we are fined, imprisoned, and hanged, without a jury trial by our peers. You shall not cheat us by getting us off to talk about something else. When we get the suffrage, then you may taunt us with anything you please, and we will then talk about it as long as you please.”
—Lucy Stone (18181893)
“The trial by market everything must come to.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
