1997 Stanley Cup Finals

The 1997 Stanley Cup Final NHL championship series was contested by the Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers. Detroit was in the Final for the second time in three years (the other coming in 1995, when they lost to the New Jersey Devils) while the Flyers were making their first appearance since the 1987 Final. Detroit won the series in four games to win the Stanley Cup for the eighth time in franchise history and the first time since 1955. Before 2009, Detroit was the last team to win the Cup without having home ice advantage in the Finals. Detroit was also the last team to win the Cup with fewer than 100 points earned during the regular season until the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals.

Famous quotes containing the words stanley and/or cup:

We’re not blind and we’re not fools. We’re just plain, sensible people who refuse to be fooled by a lot of supernatural nonsense.... There’s no magic in dried lizards and dead chickens.
—Eric Taylor. Robert Siodmak. Frank Stanley (Robert Paige)

I believe that water is the only drink for a wise man: wine is not so noble a liquor; and think of dashing the hopes of a morning with a cup of warm coffee, or of an evening with a dish of tea! Ah, how low I fall when I am tempted by them! Even music may be intoxicating. Such apparently slight causes destroyed Greece and Rome, and will destroy England and America.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
