1992 Portuguese Grand Prix

The 1992 Portuguese Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Autódromo do Estoril on September 27, 1992. It was the fourteenth round of the 1992 Formula One season. Nigel Mansell won the race, breaking the record for most wins in one season. However, the race is best remembered for the accident between Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese. Berger was intending to pit and moved towards the right side of the track on the start/finish straight, Patrese followed in his slipstream. At the pit entry, Berger lifted the throttle, Patrese hit Berger's rear wheel and the Italian's car became airborne, almost hitting the bridge over the track. Patrese escaped the shunt without injuries. The debris from the crash caused multiple dramas. Pierluigi Martini and Michael Schumacher suffered punctures, while JJ Lehto suffered slight injury as the driveshaft of the Williams went through the undertray of the Dallara, hitting him on the leg.

With the entry list having fallen to 26 cars, this race would be the first time that all cars would be automatically qualified for the race regardless of qualifying lap times.

Famous quotes containing the word grand:

It has been said that the immortality of the soul is a “grand peut-être”Mbut still it is a grand one. Everybody clings to it—the stupidest, and dullest, and wickedest of human bipeds is still persuaded that he is immortal.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
