1959 Pan American Games

1959 Pan American Games

The 3rd Pan American Games opened on August 27, 1959 in sunny 90°F (32°C) heat before 40,000 people in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The first Pan American Games held in North America, they were originally scheduled for Cleveland, Ohio, but the U.S. Congress’s decision to cut $5,000,000 in federal funding forced the city to withdraw as host. Chicago, led by Mayor Richard J. Daley, then became the choice of Pan American Sports Organization.

The Games opened at Chicago’s Soldier Field, with 2,263 athletes competing in eighteen sports. Yachting was on the sports program for the first time. Swimming events were held in the Olympic-size pool in Portage Park on the city's Northwest Side. The male athletes’ village was located on the campus of the University of Chicago. The 298 female athletes stayed nearby at the Shoreland Hotel.

Famous quotes containing the words pan, american and/or games:

A ‘spasm band’ is a miscellaneous collection of a soap box, tin cans, pan tops, nails, drumsticks, and little Negro boys. When mixed in the proper proportions this results in the wildest shuffle dancing, accompanied by a bumping rhythm.
—For the City of New Orleans, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

An accurate charting of the American woman’s progress through history might look more like a corkscrew tilted slightly to one side, its loops inching closer to the line of freedom with the passage of time—but like a mathematical curve approaching infinity, never touching its goal. . . . Each time, the spiral turns her back just short of the finish line.
    Susan Faludi (20th century)

Criticism occupies the lowest place in the literary hierarchy: as regards form, almost always; and as regards moral value, incontestably. It comes after rhyming games and acrostics, which at least require a certain inventiveness.
    Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880)
