The British 18th (Eastern) Division was a New Army division formed in September 1914 as part of the K2 Army Group. The division landed in France on 25 May 1915 and spent the duration of the First World War in action on the Western Front, becoming one of the elite divisions of the British Army. During the Battle of the Somme, the Division was commanded by Major General Ivor Maxse.
Famous quotes containing the word division:
“For in the division of the nations of the whole earth he set a ruler over every people; but Israel is the Lords portion: whom, being his firstborn, he nourisheth with discipline, and giving him the light of his love doth not forsake him. Therefore all their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.”
—Apocrypha. Ecclesiasticus 17:17-9.
