Famous quotes containing the words states, admitted, territories and/or created:
“I asked myself, Is it going to prevent me from getting out of here? Is there a risk of death attached to it? Is it permanently disabling? Is it permanently disfiguring? Lastly, is it excruciating? If it doesnt fit one of those five categories, then it isnt important.”
—Rhonda Cornum, United States Army Major. As quoted in Newsweek magazine, Perspectives page (July 13, 1992)
“It must be admitted that there are some parts of the soul which we must entirely paralyse before we can live happily in this world.”
—Sébastien-Roch Nicolas De Chamfort (17411794)
“For my part, I feel that with regard to Nature I live a sort of border life, on the confines of a world into which I make occasional and transient forays only, and my patriotism and allegiance to the state into whose territories I seem to retreat are those of a moss-trooper.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Have We not made the earth as a cradle
and the mountains as pegs?
And We created you in pairs,
and We appointed your sleep for a rest;
and We appointed night for a garment,
and We appointed day for a livelihood.
And We have built above you seven strong ones,
and We appointed a blazing lamp
and have sent down out of the rain-clouds water cascading
that We may bring forth thereby grain and plants,
and gardens luxuriant.”
—Quran, The Tiding 78:6-16, ed. Arthur J. Arberry (1955)
